I am not a beat savy person. I often end up adding drums as an afterthought to my music instead of having it as the center point.
One of my favorite tools for making beats is the elektron monomachine as I have a very unique workflow that creates random rhythms for me in a quick and dirty fashion and it generates something really unique. Maybe more for electronic music than acoustic music though...
In this video I show how I work with the machine and shows a glimpse of the beat in its final context in the end.
