I'm John Allen, president and CEO of Product Safety Consulting. We've been helping manufacturers obtain product certifications around the world for over 35 years now. We came up with a series of videos to show you how to do the basic testing in product safety.
Today we're showing you how to do an insulation resistance test, typically done in the field. And it's in LU of a dielectric withstand test that we have another video for. So for grounded products and ungrounded products, what we're doing is measuring the insulation resistance, exactly what it sounds like, measuring the resistance of the insulation system. And we want to make sure for grounded products, it's more than one mega ohm. And for ungrounded products, it's more than two mega ohm.
So again, just like the dielectric, we're going to tie, line and neutral together. We're going to put one probe on that node, and I'm going to use banana clips. Some people call them alligator clips, and I'm just going to use them for ease of doing our test to the other probe to ground.
Again, for a grounded system, we're looking for more than one mega ohm. Press the test button on the probe and you can see we're 550 mega ohms. So this is a pass. This test will run for 60 seconds. So for our ungrounded product, we have a table lamp and we take our banana clips, alligator clips, tie them together, put one probe on those tied together, that's tied together system, and then we take the other probe and go to ground.
Well, dead metal. Press our test button. And again, for ungrounded products, we're looking for more than two mega ohm. And as you can see by the meter, we have 550 ohms. This test again, will run for 60 seconds. This is a pass as well.
