In this video, we discuss Dower (Mehr) — a key concept in Islamic marriage law.
What is Dower?
Dower is a mandatory payment by the husband to the wife at the time of marriage. It is her legal and religious right, showing respect, commitment, and financial security.
Objective of Dower:
The main goal of dower is to honor the wife, provide financial protection, and recognize her importance in the marriage. It also works as a safeguard in case of divorce or the husband's death.
Types of Dower:
1. Prompt Dower (Mu'ajjal): Paid immediately at the time of marriage.
2. Deferred Dower (Mu'akhar): Paid later, either on demand or at the time of divorce/death.
3. Specified Dower (Musamma): Fixed amount agreed upon by both parties.
4. Proper Dower (Mithl): Decided based on family custom when no amount is fixed.
