Please join the Ukrainian Studies Program and the Harriman Institute for a lecture by Emina Muzaferija. Moderated by Tanya Domi.
In “Recovering Territory: The Thick Geopolitics of Demining in Postwar Bosnia-Herzegovina and Wartime Ukraine,” Dr. Emina Muzaferija conceptualizes demining as a geopolitical and territorial practice rather than a purely technical process. Through comparative analysis of Bosnia and Ukraine, the study develops the concept of “territorial recovery” to explain how demining reshapes governance, ecology, and sovereignty. Dr. Muzaferija shows that the geopolitical context—whether anchored in peacebuilding or active conflict—fundamentally transforms demining’s meaning and impact, revealing how practices of mine clearance both reverse and reproduce the spatial and political logics of war.
