The People’s Palace in Glasgow is one of Scotland’s most important social‑history landmarks — a building created for the people, in the heart of the city’s industrial East End. In this episode of Historical Landmarks Explored by Drone, we take a calm, atmospheric flight around the People’s Palace and the Winter Gardens, uncovering the building’s origins, its changing role in the city, and the surprising truth about who really built the Winter Gardens.
Through maps from 1780, 1807, 1857, 1892 and 1934, we trace how Glasgow Green evolved from washing houses and the Camlachie Burn into the civic park we know today. As your drone glides over the glass roof and red sandstone façade, the narration reveals how the building was designed by City Engineer Alexander Beith McDonald and opened in 1898 as “a palace of pleasure and imagination” - open to the people for ever and ever!
We explore the building’s classical‑Victorian architecture, its allegorical sculptures, its early reading rooms and galleries, and its role as a community hub. And at the six‑minute mark, we uncover a widely misunderstood fact: the Winter Gardens were not built by James Boyd & Sons, but by the Abercorn Construction Company of Paisley, the construction arm of Abercorn Foundry.
The video then follows the People’s Palace through the 20th century — its renaming as the “Old Museum”, its revival in 1975, its 1998 restoration, and the difficult years following the 2018 closure of the Winter Gardens. Today, the building is undergoing a £35.9 million restoration, though its reopening has been delayed due to a £12 million funding shortfall.
This peaceful aerial film is accompanied by relaxing jazz pieces, including two vintage tracks that beautifully complement the Victorian glasshouse and red sandstone architecture.
If you care about Glasgow’s heritage - or simply enjoy calm, beautifully shot drone films - this episode is for you.
