✨ Castel Gandolfo, this beautiful little town on an ancient crater lake, is home to the Pope’s summer palace - recently opened to the public for tours by the current pope, but a summer residence dating back to the 17th Century.

🚆 This is an easy 40-minute train from Termini (Rome’s central station) and will cost you just about €2, making it an affordable day out! Beware you do have to walk up a long, steep hill (15 min) to reach the town upon arrival from the train station.

💶 Entrance to the palace is just €12 if you book through the Vatican museum website directly.

🍝 The town is small, but has a charming few alleyways (pedestrian only) with cute shops and plenty of highly rated restaurant choices! You can eat along the ridge of the lake (with view), or go slightly cheaper in the town alleys!
