The International Monetary Fund has released its October World Economic Outlook, projecting Korea's growth rate at 3-point-3 percent for this year, largely driven by strong semiconductor exports. Our Lee Ju-yeon has the details.

The International Monetary Fund released its latest World Economic Outlook on Tuesday.

It raised South Korea’s growth forecast in October for 2026 to 3-point-3 percent, up 0-point-7 percentage points from its July forecast.
It also raised its outlook for 2027 to 2-point-8 percent, up zero-point-3 percentage points from July.

South Korea's upward forecast revision was driven by strong external demand centered on semiconductors.
The IMF identified South Korea, alongside Taiwan, as a key hub for AI hardware.

The IMF also reported that the global economy is performing better than expected, driven by expanding AI investments, despite the conflicts in the Middle East and trade tensions.

The global average growth rate across IMF member nations for 2026 is projected at 3-point-1 percent, up zero-point-1 percentage points from the July forecast, while the 2027 growth forecast remains unchanged at 3-point-4 percent.
The latest forecast assumes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in March next year, with energy supply gradually normalizing to pre-war levels by October next year.

Yet, for now, the IMF highlighted ongoing risks including inflation and trade conflict, emphasizing the need for quick and flexible policy responses by each nation.

The Korean government pledged to focus on stabilizing livelihoods and reducing economic inequality as high inflation and external risks continue to burden households.
