Ṣaṣṭāṅga & Pañcāṅga Daṇḍavat Pranām Explained – ISKCON Tradition 🙏

In ISKCON temples, whenever devotees take darshan of the Deities, enter or leave the temple hall, or meet a senior Vaiṣṇava, they humbly offer pranām – obeisances. But did you know there are different types of pranām described in the Vedic scriptures?

This video clearly explains the meaning, process, and spiritual significance of Ṣaṣṭāṅga and Pañcāṅga Daṇḍavat Pranām that every devotee practices in ISKCON.

✨ What is Pranām?

The word pranām means bowing down with respect and surrender. It is not just a physical act but a heartfelt expression of humility, surrender, and gratitude before the Supreme Lord and His devotees. By offering pranām, we remind ourselves: “I am not this body. I am a servant of Kṛṣṇa.”

🙇 Types of Pranām in ISKCON

1️⃣ Ṣaṣṭāṅga Daṇḍavat Pranām

“Ṣaṣṭa” = Six, “Aṅga” = Limbs.

A devotee falls flat on the ground, offering six parts of the body – hands, chest, knees, feet, head, and mind – in complete surrender.

This is generally done by men in ISKCON temples.

It symbolizes total surrender of the body, mind, and soul at the lotus feet of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

2️⃣ Pañcāṅga Pranām

“Pañca” = Five, “Aṅga” = Limbs.

A devotee offers obeisances by touching the ground with five parts – both hands, both knees, and the head.

This is commonly offered by women in ISKCON temples.

It is equally respectful and spiritually powerful.

🌸 Why Do We Offer Pranām?

To express humility and surrender before God.

To remind ourselves that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Lord and we are His eternal servants (jīvera svarūpa haya – kṛṣṇera nitya-dāsa).

To offer respect to devotees, recognizing them as representatives of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

To purify the false ego and cultivate bhakti.

📿 Pranām Mantra in ISKCON

When devotees bow down, they chant:

“nama oṁ viṣṇu-pādāya kṛṣṇa-preṣṭhāya bhū-tale śrīmate bhaktivedānta-svāmin iti nāmine …”

Or the simple obeisance:

“vāñchā-kalpatarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ”

These mantras connect our offering directly to the Guru-paramparā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

🙏 The Mood of Pranām

Srila Prabhupāda emphasized that pranām must not be mechanical. It is a conscious act of surrender:

With folded hands 🙏 and humility in the heart.

With respect and gratitude to Lord Kṛṣṇa, Śrī Guru, and the Vaiṣṇavas.

With faith that by bowing down, one gains spiritual blessings and purification.

🛕 ISKCON Temple Practice

Devotees offer Ṣaṣṭāṅga Daṇḍavat when they enter or leave the temple hall.

Women offer Pañcāṅga Pranām in the same situations.

During kīrtan, ārati, and darshan, devotees may bow multiple times.

Offering pranām is also a way of greeting senior devotees.

🌺 Benefits of Offering Pranām

✔ Removes false ego and cultivates humility.
✔ Purifies the heart and consciousness.
✔ Attracts the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa and His devotees.
✔ Helps us remember our eternal identity as servants of God.
✔ Pleases Śrīla Prabhupāda, who instructed us to always respect Vaiṣṇavas.

✨ Final Thought

Pranām is not a formality – it is a yoga of humility and surrender. When we bow down fully in daṇḍavat, our body, mind, and soul unite in service to Kṛṣṇa.

So next time you visit an ISKCON temple, remember:

Men → offer Ṣaṣṭāṅga Daṇḍavat Pranām.

Women → offer Pañcāṅga Pranām.
And always chant the pranām mantra with devotion.

By this simple act, we can progress steadily on the path of bhakti.
