Best Whale Watching Sightings in San Diego – January 2026 | Gray Whale Migration & Courting Behavior Recap
Welcome back to the channel! January 2026 delivered some of the most unforgettable whale watching moments we’ve ever experienced off the coast of San Diego, California. This video is a full recap of the best gray whale sightings of the month — and trust me, it was a season to remember.
Throughout January, we encountered five different gray whale moms and calves making their incredible southbound migration toward the warm lagoons of Baja California. Watching these gentle giants guide their newborns through the Pacific was nothing short of magical. We also witnessed large groups of adult gray whales displaying rare and fascinating courtship behavior, giving us a front‑row seat to one of nature’s most intimate spectacles.
About Gray Whales: History & Mating Behavior
Gray whales have one of the longest migrations of any mammal on Earth — traveling up to 12,000 miles round‑trip each year. Historically, these whales were hunted heavily in the 19th and early 20th centuries, pushing them close to extinction. Thanks to conservation efforts and international protection, the Eastern Pacific gray whale population has made a remarkable recovery, and today they remain a symbol of resilience and ocean conservation.
During migration, gray whales often gather in groups known as “courting pods.” These pods can include several males and a single female, engaging in cooperative and sometimes acrobatic mating behaviors. It’s a rare and breathtaking sight — and this month, we were lucky enough to capture multiple displays of this unique behavior on camera.
-Perfect Weather & Calm Ocean Conditions
January blessed us with sunny skies, warm light, and calm swells that made every trip out on the water smooth and comfortable. The crystal‑clear visibility and glassy ocean surface created ideal conditions for spotting whales, filming underwater behavior, and enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Pacific.
