DNA Replication Vocabulary
Helicase- enzymes that bind to nucleic acids. Separate (unwinds) DNA into single strands allowing each strand to be copied.
Annealing- When DNA is rejoined
5’ = Carbon has a phosphate group attached to it
3’ = Carbon has a hydroxyl (-OH) group
DNA Polymerase- Enzyme that creates DNA molecule by assembling nucleotides
(Always synthesizes in the 5’ to 3’ direction)
(Can only add nucleotides on the 3’ end)
RNA Primer- Very short strand of RNA that is the starting point for DNA synthesis.
DNA Ligase- An enzyme that facilitates the joining of DNA strands
