Exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of World War II submarine USS Cobia

The USS Cobia is in dry dock right now in Sturgeon Bay. It's a historic landmark that usually floats next to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.

For the rest of the month of September, this is her home as she's cleaned, inspected, painted and repaired. And after arriving last week, engineers were surprised by what they found. But sometimes, surprises are good surprises.

One thousand six hundred twenty-five tons of World War II steel is currently perched on blocks, sitting in dry dock at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay. It's been nearly 30 years since the USS Cobia was last in dry dock for maintenance -- a decade past the recommended interval.

Because of that, BayShip project manager Kevin Lauder says the engineers worried about what they'd find. But the Cobia surprised them all.

The only thing that didn't go to plan was a torpedo door falling off during transit from Manitowoc to Sturgeon Bay, but it's already been recovered.

Once she was lifted up out of the water, about three tons of algae, mussels and other gunk were sand blasted off the Cobia's hull before getting a fresh prime, paint and seal.

But the thing is, you can't paint the areas that are sitting on the supports. So what they're going to have to do is, they actually have to re-float it, move it a few feet and then paint those spots that were sitting on those supports.

BayShip Vice President Jeff Frank says this project has been a long time coming -- and they take great pride in it.

BayShip has been working closely with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum every step of the way. Submarine curator Karen Duvalle says BayShip has been giving this historic landmark the care she deserves.

While the Cobia was built as a mere instrument of war, she's become much more than that to the communities that surround her now. With this restoration work, she'll continue to float on in those communities for years to come.
