Platysma is the most superficial anterior neck muscle from stretching from clavical to mandible but it actually goes further than that in both directions! It actually inserts into the upper pectoral tissue and extends over the mandible. This muscle is known to cause 'Turkey Neck' or Accordion lines on the front of the neck. It is also known to cause 'jowls' from it's insertion point over the mandible.
PLATYSMA
Origin: FASCIA of the upper thorax, including:
Clavicle to Acromial region, Pectoralis major & Deltoid
Insertion:
Mandible, Skin and fascia of the lower face, Orbicularis oris muscle (in some individuals), and Depressor anguli oris muscle (in some individuals).
*Note: The exact origin and insertion may vary slightly between individuals.
Function:
Fascia of the upper thorax, including:
Aids facial expression by lowering the inferior lips.
Depresses mandible.
Tenses the skin of the anterior neck.
Releases pressure of the skin on the subjacent veins.
