Crazy night in Gion! On Sunday, February 3, 2026 in Kyoto's Higashiyama District we witness the famous Hyottoko Dance. Starting at the Manzoku Inari Shrine and then proceeding across the Gion District. Will we encounter any Maiko or Geiko along the way? Why are there frogs here? Shot in 4K on an iPhone 17 Pro in HDR and 60fps.

On the night of Setsubun, after the bean throwing, the Manzoku Inari Shrine in Higashiyama has a performance by group of Hyottokos who parades from Gion Shirakawa to Hanamikoji. And somehow frog men appear too! WTF! Let's enjoy!


節分とは、本来は季節の変わり目である立春や立冬などの前日を指す言葉でした。昔は、立春は新年の始まりでもあったので、その前日である節分の日、新しい年を迎えるにあたり、厄をお祓いし、豆まきを行い、招福を願うお祭り《節分祭》としてはじまりました。

宮司自ら調理する満足善哉（まんぞくぜんざい）ほか、飴湯（あめゆ）、福引／福豆などが、お祭り期間中、境内にて振る舞われます。旧神札、お守りなどのお焚き上げも行ないます。また《狐巫女の豆まき》が、２月３日（火）１８時より、　《ひょっとこ踊り》が１９時より、五穀豊穣、商売繁盛を祈願し執り行われます。

Hyottoko is a comical Japanese character, portrayed through the use of a mask. His mouth is puckered and skewed to one side. Some masks have different eye sizes between the left and right eyes. He is often wearing a scarf around his head (usually white with blue dots). There is a similar character for women called Okame or Otafuku, seen on the left above.

The origin of the name comes from “fire” and “man,” because the character is blowing fire with a bamboo pipe, hence the shape of the mouth.
Hyottoko seems to have been a legendary character in Japan in the past, and is now a stock character.
