I’m 90 years old.
For 67 years, my husband Arthur told me I was beautiful.
Morning.
Afternoon.
Even when I looked half asleep with toothpaste on my chin.
He said it hundreds… maybe thousands of times.
And every time I answered the same way.
“Oh stop it.”
I thought he was exaggerating.
I thought he was being sweet.
So I never said it back.
Not once.
After he died, I found a shoebox in his closet.
Inside were old photographs of him.
And on the back of every photo he had written the same two words.
“Not bad.”
My husband thought that was the best he deserved.
Because the one person who should have told him he was beautiful…
never did.
If someone you love tells you you’re beautiful today…
don’t push it away.
Look at them.
And say it back.
Before it becomes something you can only say to a photograph.
