Our Zanzibar escape began in the vibrant city of Dar es Salaam, where the ocean breeze already hinted at the adventure ahead. By 1:40 PM, after a scenic ride on the Zan Fest ferry, we arrived in the magical island paradise of Zanzibar — sun-kissed, salty, and full of promise.
A Flavorful Welcome
The moment we stepped off the ferry, hunger took over. Without wasting a second, we headed straight to the iconic Lukmaan Restaurant, one of the most famous local spots on the island. The food? Absolutely delicious. Every bite felt like the perfect welcome to Zanzibar — rich flavors, comforting spices, and the warmth of authentic coastal cuisine.
Nakupenda — A Sandbank Dream
With our cravings satisfied, we set off for the breathtaking Nakupenda Beach. Getting there required a boat ride — and a bit of bargaining skills! The initial price was sky-high, but after some negotiation, we managed to bring it down and hopped aboard.
The one-hour ride (each way) across the turquoise waters was calming and scenic. And then we arrived — a strip of white sand surrounded by endless shades of blue. Nakupenda was truly a sight to behold. For about an hour, we soaked in the beauty, feeling like we had discovered a hidden slice of paradise.
Sunset Stops & Midnight Grills
After returning, we called it a day and made our way to the hotel — a journey that took about an hour and a half. Along the roadside, we passed local women selling fresh fruits, adding such authenticity and charm to the experience. We made a small pit stop at a humble stall for tea and dried fish — simple, local, and memorable.
Once checked in, the night turned lively. The guys took charge of grilling chicken while the women relaxed and enjoyed the pool. Laughter echoed, music played, and time slipped away — we stayed up until 2 AM, fully embracing the joy of togetherness.
Underwater Wonders & Turtle Encounters
The next morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we continued our adventure with an unforgettable sea walk experience. Walking beneath the sea with oxygen tanks on our heads felt surreal — like stepping into another world. The marine life, the quiet underwater calm — it was truly magical and a memory we’ll cherish forever.
As if that wasn’t enough, we then went to swim with turtles. There were so many of them! We fed them what seemed to be seaweed and swam alongside these gentle creatures for nearly two hours. Being that close to nature was both humbling and exhilarating.
Evenings at Forodhani
Later, we checked into another hotel near town and headed to the lively Forodhani Gardens — famously known as a food paradise. The park came alive in the evening with stalls offering seafood, grilled meats, shawarmas, and refreshing beverages. The aroma alone was irresistible. We ate until we were completely stuffed and walked back to our hotel with happy hearts and full stomachs.
Until Next Time, Zanzibar
The next day, we boarded the ferry back to Dar es Salaam, carrying with us sun-kissed skin, countless laughs, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Zanzibar wasn’t just a trip — it was an experience. A blend of adventure, culture, food, and friendship. And without a doubt, it’s a place that will always call us back. 🌊✨
