For best quality watch in 1080p! -- More than thirty years ago, in the summer of 1980, when I was 16, I recorded from dutch radio on tape this splendid performance of Peter Sculthorpe's 'Mangrove'. It turns out to be the very special first (never commercially released) recording, the 1979 world premiere performance, played by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Louis Frémaux to whom Sculthorpe dedicated this work.
'Mangrove' is wonderful 'neo-romantic' music. I loved this piece from the very first time I heard it. Sculthorpe evokes the world and life-space of the Mangrove tree through veery beautiful, mostly tranquil music. It's music that really connects the listener on a spiritual level with the mysterious beauty of nature. In the video I've combined the music with pictures from the worldwide web of the mangrove tree. I did my best to arrange the pictures in such a way that they should support the music. In two beautifully orchestrated sections of 'Mangrove' birds appear on the scene. I decided however not to use pictures of birds here, as I couldn't find the 'right pictures'. Instead I decided here to support the 'dramatic feel' of the music by zooming in and out on branches and roots of mangrove trees and I think this might work even better here than a 'literal' illustration through the use of bird pictures.
My sole aim here is to support and promote this beautiful music and its composer Peter Sculthorpe. I decided to upload this recording since I think this beautiful performance deserves to be heard by lovers of serious music all over the world. Cause wouldn't it be a pity to keep it hidden for another thirty years?
Enjoy!
