Victoria Morden - Sampling-More than just Putting Rocks in Bags

Next, we look at the various ways to collect samples with a focus on drilling. Having defined the source of errors, we can now see where they may occur, how to limit or monitor them so that we have a low risk, representative sample that is fit for purpose.
We discuss theory vs practicality, supervision of drill rigs and sampling as it occurs. What is the role of the geologist in all this? We put all the learning into perspective by looking at case studies of cases of what happens when good sampling practice is ignored.

ABOUT VICTORIA MORDEN (NORTHERN STAR)
Victoria has an Honours degree in Geology and an MSc in Mining Geology. She has fifteen years’ experience in green field exploration, near mine expansion and underground mine geology, with a focus on the Archean gold systems of Western Australia. She also has exposure to magmatic nickel sulphide and porphyry copper systems early in her career.
Her preference is towards underground mine geology, where things are fast paced, her greenfield exploration experience was a steep learning curve, she still has nightmares of getting lost out bush and chasing RAB rigs in floods of tears.
She is the Senior QA/QC geologist for Northern Star Resources, with responsibility for both exploration and mining. She has a special interest in focussing on achieving the best sample quality possible, spending a high proportion of her time trying to instil an interest in the quality of sampling and assaying across our sites. Her job entails data analysis, keeping an eye on labs and spending time on site training and mentoring staff.
