Tempel Smith, a meditation teacher and devoted social activist, has always sought equilibrium amid diverse perspectives. This trait originated from his upbringing, where his Marxist professor father and neuroscientist mother held opposing viewpoints on how society shapes individuals. Despite their differences, both parents believed in hidden societal forces influencing unconsciousness. As a young adult, Tempel found solace during canoe trips, untangling himself from societal complexity. He studied physics at Reed College, influenced by his mother’s genetic determinism, while engaging in progressive causes.

Amidst tensions at a Nevada nuclear site protest, Tempel realized his choice in response, witnessing activists embodying nonviolent engagement. He embarked on meditation practice to reconcile his activism and inner exploration. Attending retreats, he discovered a sense of self as an attempt to organize chaos, resolving his parents' dichotomous perspectives. Longer retreats offered insight into metta (loving-kindness), inspiring him to merge activism and meditation through Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings.
Diana Winston suggested he visit Myanmar's Sayadaw U Pandita, where Tempel deepened his spiritual journey within Burmese meditation traditions. His Myanmar experiences are explored in Part 2 of this conversation.
