I didn’t expect to be riding here today — I just spotted Coombs Wood on Trailforks while heading out to Penrith and thought, let’s go for it. What I found turned out to be some of the toughest, gnarliest techy trails I’ve ever seen. From the start, I had to ride with extreme caution.

After a few near misses in the thick undergrowth, where sheer drops and obstacles lurked just inches away, I realized I was never far from a crash. And trust me, this is not a place you want to be crashing alone — the sides are near vertical, and getting help could be a challenge.

Once I gathered my composure, I faced a section called Jurassic, which is marked as a blue trail on Trailforks but felt more like a trail centre black run. If you plan on riding here, be very cautious.

Coombs Wood is located north of Penrith, just about a mile from Armathwaite on the A6. It’s packed with potential and has some incredibly well-built trails, but it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.
