In this video, we embark on an epic hike through Queensland's stunning Carnarvon Gorge! Along the way, we run into some unexpected challenges, like running out of water, and have to get creative to keep going.
If you're after a memorable hike in Queensland, this one won't let you down. It's tough but incredibly rewarding. If you're ever in the area, give it a shot!
First tip: make sure you have enough fuel if you're visiting in June. We thought we'd be fine with a full tank since the Gorge was only 150km away. What we didn’t account for was the extra 100km of driving around the area, adding up to 400km on low-speed dirt roads, leaving us nearly out of fuel!
We stayed at The Big4 Breeze Holiday Park (formerly Takarakka Bush Resort) for 4 nights. After a late arrival, we settled in and did some short walks that afternoon.
Day two: We hiked from the start of the park to Big Bend and camped there overnight. Just before sunset, we hiked up Battleship Spur. Tip: don’t do this late! We ran out of daylight and had to descend over dangerous, slippery rocks in the dark—definitely not ideal.
Another thing to note: you need to book the Big Bend campsite ahead of time. There’s a tourist center to do this at the start, but the WiFi is awful. It’s much easier to book before arriving.
Reception is spotty at best. Where we stayed had some coverage, but it was unreliable, and the public phone didn’t work, so prepare for minimal connectivity.
Big Bend has rats! Make sure to secure your food by hanging it from a tree. We saw someone’s tent get chewed through by hungry rats!
Bring at least 5 liters of water per person. We took 6 liters total, but it wasn’t enough. Fortunately, we met a fellow hiker with a water filter who helped us out by filtering water from the Gorge—don’t drink it untreated due to waterborne viruses.
On day three, we trekked back and explored the scenic offshoots. We carried way too much weight (about 15-16kg each), which wore us out. If you're doing a day hike, pack light or consider just doing the in-and-out walk since there’s no midway camping option.
Despite the challenges, this hike was absolutely worth it. Carnarvon Gorge’s natural beauty is breathtaking and hard to describe—it’s truly a must-do for hikers. To top it off, consider a helicopter flight over the area (though they don't fly over the main gorge for safety reasons). The views are still unforgettable!
