The Struggle Between Change and Tradition
This article was written by Roland Simon
Things Fall Apart is a novel written by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. It is an authentic African tale from the local people’S perspective. This book is a treasure trove for social anthropologists and laymen alike. I am going to describe the struggle between change and tradition in this novel.
The main character is Okonkwo, who has three wives and ten children. He keeps his tribe'S ancient tradition alive BY pursuing his passion. He has brute physical features; he is a very successful wrestler. When he defeats a champion he becomes the chief of the Igbo tribe. He epitomises the great leader, furthermore he cannot bear any kind of shortcoming OR weakness; he is feared and AN abusive misogynist. He harshly beats his children and his wives in order to discipline them. The Igbo tribe is a close-knit patriarchal society which is rife with superstition. Unlike most European history pundits who depict clans full of ignoramuses and savages, the writer portrays them as a culturally-rich vibrant and ruthless community. As readers follow the main character’s life page to page, they can imagine they were among these people. They can hear the rhythmic throbbing of the drums during wrestling events and they can feel the excitement of the participants and the spectators and they can hear the wise elders TELLING tales. Story telling plays an indispensable role in their lives.
The villagers uphold the same beliefs and customs as their ancestors used to do since the dawn of time until the ARRIVAL OF English missionaries. Most of the native people from this community convert to Christianity, even the protagonist’s son chooses the new religion by virtue of the fact that he wants to abscond from the abuse and the strict rules. Unlike the majority of his tribe members Okonkwo is adamant to never abide by the laws of the white man; BE THAT as it may they put A tremendous amount of pressure on him. The colonisers take advantage of their sophisticated weapons and they use excessive FORCE against THE reluctant native people. They give THEM two choices: submit or die. Suffice it to say that the clash between the two civilizations is inevitable. The author has many hypotheses AS TO what WOULD HAVE happened TO THE native people if European conquerors HAD never set foot on the African continent.
In conclusion, the tribe is on the verge of change, they have two options left, they CAN submit to the powerful European colonisers or the entirITY OF clans will be annihilated. It is a unique book, which tellS the course of history from the local people’s point of view.
