This episode is very much about learning by getting punched in the face. Since it’s still early in the run, I’m walking through systems as they appear — explaining what I understand, calling out what I don’t, and reminding myself that “overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.”
This isn’t a clean tutorial. It’s a learning run. Systems trigger, enemies do weird things, characters get crit, stressed, diseased, and killed — and each moment becomes a chance to explain how Darkest Dungeon actually works under the hood.
What happens in this episode:
🌾 The Farmstead
Waves of enemies, nonstop combat, no exploration, and an early reminder that heroes will die. Losing a character this early really drives home the idea that, especially at the start, heroes are a resource, not the goal.
🪰 “Something’s A-Buzz” & the Courtyard
We trigger the event that opens up the Courtyard and talk about why ignoring it is a trap. Letting it sit means the same bad event keeps firing, so you have to deal with it before it festers (literally).
🐊 The Crocodilian
A bad feeling turns into a boss fight we’re absolutely not ready for. Massive stress, party-wide hits, and the responsible choice to retreat instead of forcing a wipe.
🏰 Back at the Hamlet
Smith upgrades, armor, stress relief, recruiting new heroes, and more system-level explanations.
🐖 The Warrens
Diseases. So many diseases. One run, multiple infections, and a crash course in how punishing this area can be if you’re unprepared.
🩸 New Recruits
We finish by picking up the Flagellant and an Occultist, opening the door to some very different (and very risky) party dynamics going forward.

🎮 Game Info:
Darkest Dungeon is a gothic roguelike RPG focused on dungeon crawling, party management, and psychological stress. Instead of power fantasies, the game emphasizes attrition, loss, and long-term decision-making. Heroes can suffer mental breaks, contract diseases, develop permanent quirks, or die outright — and the real progression comes from upgrading the Hamlet and learning when to push forward versus when to retreat.
Originally released in 2016, Darkest Dungeon is known for its brutal difficulty, narrator-driven atmosphere, and systems that punish overconfidence as much as poor planning.
