Relationships serve as the foundation for influence. And for leaders to make an impact in an organization, they need to have influence to leverage. That means all leaders should be working to strategically cultivate influence at work.
In the video, Joel mentions an anecdote that business professor Linda Hill shared in a Harvard Business Review article. Hill describes how a new manager was relying too heavily on her formal authority to gain influence at work with the people she’d begun supervising. Instead, she should be forging a network of strong relationships with them, Hill said.
This means thinking of whom you need to know throughout the whole organization.
Gaining influence with them won’t be instantaneous—to gain real influence, put work into cultivating relationships over a period of time. Think in terms of cross-functional relationships with people in other departments, even if you don’t see a clear way that you can help each other yet.
These relationships can be mutually beneficial—others might ask you for something too, or you might collaborate on an effort in the future. Keep your door open to these requests. You don’t have to say yes to everything, but keep your eyes open for exciting opportunities for collaboration.
Yes, forging all these relationships takes time, but it’s not as hard as it may sound. Even if you talk to one new person a week, you’ll soon have a lot of new connections. You don’t have to have lunch with all of them; even chatting with them after a meeting can open new doors. Your influence at work will grow exponentially as you develop positive relationships across departments and in different levels of the company.
