Can a helmet cause hair loss?
Maybe. But it depends on a lot of things. If you're worried about male pattern baldness - don't. That is mostly controlled by hormones and genetics.
There are a few types of hair loss that can be caused and worsened by long term helmet use.
The first is traction alopecia and is caused by tension and pulling of your hair shafts. This results in thinning and wispy hair in areas with the most pressure. To prevent this, make sure your helmet isn't too tight or too loose.
Another potential issue is folliculitis - an inflammation of your hair follicles. This can be caused by buildup of sweat and heat under your helmet, which can inflame the follicles. Try taking breaks or using a balaclava under the helmet.
Finally, dirty helmet liners can cause growth of bacteria and fungus, which can trigger or worsen seborrheic dermatitis. Most helmet liners are removable, so make sure to wash them regularly!
If you're dealing with male pattern baldness, condolences. Start saving for that trip to Turkey!
