Denmark has signed a contract worth over €100 million (approximately $117 million) with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to acquire the Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System (NSM CDS), significantly strengthening its maritime defense posture in Northern Europe.
The acquisition is aimed at enhancing Denmark’s ability to control strategic waterways, including the Danish Straits and the western Baltic Sea, which are critical choke points for NATO naval operations. The NSM CDS includes an advanced fire control system, mobile launch units, and the Naval Strike Missile, capable of striking both sea and land-based targets at ranges exceeding 100 nautical miles (185 km).
This move marks Denmark’s return to land-based coastal anti-ship capabilities, which were retired in 2003 with the decommissioning of its Harpoon missile batteries. One of those systems was later donated to Ukraine in 2022, underscoring Denmark’s evolving role in regional security.
Already operating NSMs aboard its Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates, Denmark now becomes the fifth NATO country to field the NSM Coastal Defence System, joining Poland, the United States, Romania, and Latvia. The system is expected to enhance deterrence not only in the Baltic Sea but also toward the North Sea, reinforcing NATO’s maritime defense against modern naval threats.
