Arno Babajanian (1921–1983) was a Soviet-Armenian composer and pianist celebrated for blending the richness of Armenian folk idioms with the expressive vocabulary of twentieth-century classical music. he trained at the Yerevan and Moscow conservatories and became one of Armenia’s most esteemed musical voices.
The Elegia in G minor was written in 1978 as a deeply personal tribute to Aram Khachaturian, who had been both a mentor and an artistic guiding figure in Arno Babajanian’s life. The piece speaks in a quiet, inward voice: a long-breathed melodic line emerges over gently shifting harmonies, creating a sense of stillness and reflection.
