South Australia is rapidly adopting renewable energy generation sources, which in turn is impacting the traditional electricity grid. These changes are causing the high voltage transmission system to experience power flows for which it was not originally designed, creating the need for new system services to help operate the grid within its technical limits.
The company Smart Wires has developed an innovative piece of technology to help manage power flow on the existing network. This technology enables system operators to adjust transmission line reactance in real-time to change power flows in the network.
Enerven was responsible for the construction, commissioning, and energisation of the Smartwires technology at ElectraNet’s Templers Substation. The project is a great example demonstrating the innovative thinking from ElectraNet and Smart Wires, allowing the introduction of new technology into the existing infrastructure to enable a better tomorrow for the network
