Modi's Assam Tirade: A Blueprint for Hate
P Abdul Majeed Faizy, National General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party of India vehemently condemns Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inflammatory speech in Darrang district, Assam, today, where he brazenly claimed the reclamation of "lakhs of acres" from so-called "infiltrators." This rhetoric is not just a distortion of facts but a deliberate assault on the dignity and rights of millions of Indian citizens, masquerading as national security. Modi's words echo the BJP's toxic playbook of communal polarization, designed to vilify an entire community for electoral dividends while ignoring the ground realities of injustice and suffering.
Let us dismantle these falsehoods with unassailable facts. The evicted families—over 15,270 since 2016, predominantly Bengali-speaking Muslims—are not foreign "infiltrators" but Indian citizens with deep roots in Assam. Many are documented on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), holding valid land titles like ryoti pattas, and have resided in these areas for generations. The BJP's eviction drives, from Dhalpur in 2021 to recent operations in Goalpara and Biswanath, have bulldozed homes, mosques, and schools without due process, displacing over 50,000 souls under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's watch. At least eight Muslims have been gunned down in these operations since 2016, turning routine evictions into bloodbaths. This is not reclamation; it is ethnic cleansing by another name.
Modi's invocation of "land jihad"—a fabricated Hindutva conspiracy theory—exposes the BJP's communal motives laid bare. There is zero evidence of any orchestrated Muslim plot to alter demographics. Census data reveals the Muslim population's growth in Assam—from 24.86% in 1951 to 34.22% in 2011—stems from natural fertility trends, declining steadily like the national average, not post-1971 infiltration. Sarma's baseless prediction of a Muslim-majority Assam by 2041 is fear-mongering to consolidate Hindu votes ahead of polls, much like the orchestrated violence in past elections. The timing of these drives, coinciding with by-elections, reeks of cynical opportunism, where vulnerable Muslims are scapegoated to distract from the BJP's failures on jobs, floods, and development.
Worse, these actions have unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe. Thousands huddle under tarpaulin sheets, bereft of shelter, livelihoods, or hope. Children orphaned, women widowed—the human toll mounts as the BJP turns a blind eye, even as corporate giants eye cleared lands for dubious projects. This is not governance; it is governance by grudge, weaponizing state machinery against a minority to appease majoritarian bigotry.
The SDPI demands an immediate halt to these discriminatory evictions, independent judicial probes into the deaths and displacements, and comprehensive rehabilitation for the affected. We call upon the international community and human rights bodies to spotlight this crisis. History will judge this era of hate as India's darkest hour.
