This is the first of a quarterly patient education series presented in collaboration with the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN.
The series will address your questions about liver transplantation:
What are the most common causes of liver failure? Who is most at risk?
When should patients be referred for liver transplant assessment?
What criteria guide referral and listing decisions?
Who is not eligible for a transplant?
How long is the deceased donor waitlist?
What are the risks and benefits of living and deceased organ transplantation?
Each session will feature:
A presentation by a UHN transplant hepatologist
Patient, donor and/or caregiver perspectives
Live Q & A
Session 1 focuses on the clinical aspects of liver disease. Session 2 (June) will focus on living liver donation and transplantation. Session 3 (September) will dive into the pre-transplant journey. Session 4 (November) will focus on living well post-transplant.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Cynthia Tsien, MD, MPH, FRCPC
Dr Cynthia Tsien completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology McGill University in Montreal. She underwent extensive training in Hepatology during her fellowships at the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease between 2009-2010 and the Cleveland Clinic between 2010-2012. After her fellowships she worked as a clinical Associate at UHN until she was recruited as an Assistant Professor of Medicine to the University of Ottawa. Cynthia joined the UHN Transplant Hepatology Team in 2021. Cynthia obtained a Masters in Public Health at the John Hopkins University and developed significant interest in teaching and postgraduate education. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Cynthia is the Education Director at the Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN.
Andrew Strickland, Patient Partner
In September 2020, while on vacation in Florida, Andrew became quite ill. When he returned to Canada he immediately went to hospital. Little did he know this was the beginning of his liver transplant journey. Hear this story.
