Mazdaspeed March 84G Group C Prototype w/ 13B Rotary Engine driving at Goodwood FoS

Описание: As you may have already understood, I had to give up my trip to Goodwood this year but I still have lot of material to be shared from previous editions. This video is from the 2019 Festival of Speed and it's about a special 1984 March 84G Gr. C racer.

The March 84G was designed by Adrian Newey in order to be raced in the Group C (C1) and GTP classes. Only seven chassis were built. Four of them were fitted with 5.7-litre Chevy V8s, one with a turbocharged 3.5-litre Buick V6 and one with a turbicharged 2.6-litre Porsche flat-6. The last and remaining chassis was purchased by Mazdaspeed and fitted with a 2-rotors 13B engine boosted by twin turbochargers. Back in the days it was able to produce 550-600hp and 448Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm.

The Mazdaspeed 84G made its debut at the 1984 Fuji 100 driven by Yoshimi Katayama and Takashi Yorino. The car only completed 153 of the 226 laps due to turbochargers failure plus fuel economy was also very poor for endurance racing. These problems effectively put an early end to Mazda's adventure with turbocharged racing cars, although the company would apply that technology to later road-going RX-7s. The rotary-powered 84G was then gifted to Yoshimi Katayama as a reward for his contribution to the company's motorsport programme. It was never raced again.

The car was found by Warwick Mortimer, from New Zealand, who was aware of he 84G, managed to purchase the car in December 2014. Every component of the car was still in place (it had never been stripped of parts) but the further te Mortimer Motorsport crew dug into the old race car the more rot and corrosion they discovered. The restoration works began in early 2016 with many of the car's bespoke parts to be remanufactured. As the project progressed it also became apparent that the car's original 13B simply couldn't be restored so a fresh twin-turbocharged rotary engine was provided by Rotorsport Racing & Engine Balancing Ltd. The restoration and first track test was held in 2019 before being shipped to the UK for the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
