Culture shocks as an Indian giving birth in the UK 🇬🇧
1️⃣ No big family crowd at the hospital
It’s usually just you and your partner during labour and post-delivery. Visiting hours are very limited, which felt strange at first—no full family waiting outside—but it actually made the experience calmer and more private.
2️⃣ Midwife-led pregnancy & labour
From pregnancy to delivery, everything is handled by midwives. During labour, I had two midwives constantly monitoring me, supporting and reassuring me. Doctors only step in if there’s a medical concern. Honestly, the whole experience felt so calm, natural, and empowering.
3️⃣ Consent & communication are a priority
Every single step was explained clearly and gently. Whether it was checking dilation, monitoring progress, or pain relief—nothing was done without asking for my permission first. Even the epidural was explained in detail, with pros and cons, before proceeding. I felt respected and fully involved in my own birth.
4️⃣ Immediate skin-to-skin
From the very first second, my baby was placed on my chest. He wasn’t taken away at all—not even while I was getting stitched. That uninterrupted bonding time was incredibly emotional and beautiful.
5️⃣ Early discharge from hospital
This was the biggest shock! If both mom and baby are doing well, you can be discharged within hours or by the next day—totally based on your comfort. No routine 2–3 day hospital stay like in India.
6️⃣ Postnatal care happens at home
Instead of staying in the hospital, midwives come home to check on you and the baby—feeding, weight checks, healing, and emotional wellbeing. It felt very supportive and personal.
7️⃣ Less medical interference, more trust in the body
There’s a strong focus on natural birth unless intervention is necessary. Fewer unnecessary scans, tests, or procedures compared to what we’re used to in India.
8️⃣ Mental health matters
They don’t just check your physical recovery—your emotional health is equally important. Midwives regularly ask how you’re coping mentally, which felt really reassuring as a new mom.
✨ Different from India, yes—but such a gentle, respectful, and empowering experience overall.
