So I've finally worked up enough courage to have a go at some longish range flights and the FrSky R9M seems to be more than up to the task. After cranking the power up to 150mW I was able to get over 1Km with RSSI in the 90s, well at least until I turned around and watched it drop off to the 70s. On my HD2 goggles I'm using the Furious FPV True-D diversity module with the latest v3.9 firmware plus an ImmersionRC SpiroNet 8dbi patch and that's giving me much better range than I've ever had with the built-in diversity receiver on the Aomway Commander V1 goggles.
The quad is just my beat up old QAV-X210 (something I don't mind losing) running cheap DYS Samguk 2206 2600kV motors on 4S 1300mAh lipos, plus a 600mW TBS Unify VTX and footage was recording using a GoPro Session 4 @ 1080P/48fps. This quad's isn't smooth at all (probably due to the battered motors) so I added a cheap plastic ND8 filter I got off Ebay to the GoPro, which mostly helped motion-blur the jitter out, but unfortunately gave an awful "veiling glare" when directly facing the sun.
I recon I could go further out but didn't want to push it. All in all I'm happy with the results, and I'm keen to do some more of these flights but with better gear! :)
