Ossetia is a relatively remote region high in the Caucasus Mountains. This suite of dances, collectively known as Iron Kaft, was presented as part of EDT's 2013 Spring Concert Series, Black Sea Treasures.
Simd is the only dance in which the man and woman are allowed to touch. The men show restraint as they hook arms through those of the women. The man looks intently at the woman's face, but she may only look at his chest. The beauty of Simd is contained within the strict graphic outline of the dance, the rigidity of line formations, and the harmony created by the synthesis of these factors.
In the dance Khonga, a man invites a woman to dance with him. Khonga is performed by two dancers and is characterized by the grace and softness of their respective movements.
