This review article focuses on data from four South Asian countries, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, where marriage is near universal and a large proportion of women still marry below the United Nations prescribed minimum marriage age of 18 years.

The adverse health consequences of an early age at marriage and childbearing include malnutrition, high rates of morbidity and mortality, and the complex association of marriage age, educational attainment, and low societal status of women. Studies consistently find a public health dividend of increased girls' education for maternal and child nutritional status and health outcomes. However, recent relative increases in girls' educational attainment across South Asia have had limited success in delaying marriage age.

In order for public health initiatives to maximize the health of women and their offspring, they must first address the factors that shape the age at which women marry. Between 2000 and 2011, one in three women aged 20-24 years in the global south (excluding China) were estimated to have married before they reached the age of 18 years. At the current rate, 39,000 girls are projected to marry under-age age each day, amounting to over 14.2 million girls each year over the next decade.
