Born on February 13, 1821 in Anomansa (Elmina), Nana Kobina Gyan I was destined for leadership from an early age. As the son of Nana Kobina Conduah I — king of Elmina from 1863 to 1869 — Kobina Gyan served as a prominent spokesperson for his people.
During the turbulent times following the 1867 Anglo-Dutch Convention, which triggered the siege of Elmina by the Fante Confederacy, Nana Kobina Gyan co-authored a petition to King William III of the Netherlands in August 1868, pleading for support against external aggression.
After witnessing the political downfall of his father, who was destooled in January 1869 for not strongly opposing colonial policies, Kobina Gyan was enstooled as king on July 15, 1869, taking the revered stool name Nana Kobina Gyan I.
The next four years would bring challenges and resistance, that forever engraved his name in the history of Elmina and Ghana.
This short video offers a glimpse into the early life of a leader whose courage and vision continue to inspire generations.
