Hot dip galvanizing is specified in many projects for structural steel to provide sacrificial corrosion protection. The specifications typically also call for additional layers of coating to be applied over the zinc layer to provide barrier protection. This is a very outdated method with many inherent
practical application difficulties. Issues such as hydrogen embrittlement, lack of coating adhesion, poor finish, are associated with these types of duplex coating systems.
