In 1821 it became the site of The Battle of Three Trees, when Jean Lafitte's men used two cannons to chase the Karankawa Indian Tribe off of Galveston Island permanently. Later in 1821 Lafitte burned his fort when the U.S.S. Enterprise arrived to ask him and his gang to leave the Galveston area, but the old oak grove that housed it is still there.
