Many beer fans and brewing experts believe Westvleteren 12 is the best beer in the world. The story began in 1831, when a group of Trappist monks left Mont de Cats Abbey in France and settled in Westvleteren, Belgium. They established a new monastery, St. Sixtus Abbey. The monks started brewing beer in 1838 and received a brewing license from King Leopold 1 the next year.
The Trappists at St. Sixtus began selling their beer to the general public in 1931 with different versions labeled 4º, 6º and 8º, based on brewing degrees. They released a 12º beer in 1939, ancestor of the famous Westvleteren 12.
The abbey acted as a hospital for Allied soldiers in WWI and during the German occupation in WWII, the monks kept their copper brewing vessels, which the Germans confiscated from other Belgian monasteries. After the Allies liberated Belgium, St. Sixtus gave the St. Bernardus brewery a license to sell Trappist beer, which continued until 1992.
Westvleteren 12 became popular during the 21st century. With its deep amber color, caramel and chocolate taste and nutty notes, it’s easy to see why many beer lovers consider it the best brew in the world. Westvleteren 12, a Catholic idea, is a favorite among beer drinkers.
