Unless you're a camera buff, you may think that all the film used to make movies is the same. But did you know that, today, there are three major gauges of film in use? There is 16mm, the very common 35mm, and the much less common 65mm. The gauge of a film refers to the width of the filmstrip, and this greatly affects the look and feel of the images. There is also Imax 65mm, which is typically reserved for films being shown in Imax theaters. And of course, some filmmakers choose to ditch film altogether and shoot their movies with digital cameras. But how do filmmakers decide on which type of film they want to shoot with? This video breaks down the look of different types of film, how they can be used to enhance a movie, and why a filmmaker might opt for one gauge of film over another.
