This is Greg Leonberger's flash talk presentation from Marquette's 2019 Investment Symposium.
Two of the biggest headline threats to economic growth and capital market returns are recessions and high inflation. While neither are welcome developments, we devote our final flash talk to examining the impact each has had on asset classes and investment portfolios.
We begin with definitions and develop historical contexts for each. Critically, we examine asset class and portfolio performance in each instance and identify which economic threat — recession or inflation — has tended to be more damaging for investors. Finally, we assess the likelihood of each in today’s market environment and offer portfolio guidance to ensure successful asset stewardship in times of economic stress.
