These lines capture the feeling many migrants must have experienced across centuries — the mixture of uncertainty, hope, and displacement that comes with leaving one’s homeland. The journey feels almost symbolic: a long voyage from the familiar into the unknown.

The chorus brings the listener to the moment of arrival:
“Arrived in Sydney town, when I gazed around,
The bay pristine, no one on the ground.”

Here the lyric paints a powerful image of the vast beauty of Sydney Harbour, one of the most striking natural harbours in the world. For convicts arriving by ship, the sight of its calm waters and open shores would have been unforgettable.

The song also reflects on the deeper history of Australia’s beginnings. In 1788, the First Fleet arrived in Sydney, carrying convicts, soldiers, and officers from Britain. Their arrival marked the establishment of the British colony of New South Wales under the leadership of Arthur Phillip.

For many migrants from Britain — often jokingly called “Poms” — Australia represented a dramatic contrast to the colder, cloudier climate of England. The bright sun, long beaches, and open landscapes symbolised opportunity and renewal.

I suggest that Australia’s identity emerged through cooperation, adaptation, and resilience across generations. A fight given for freedom in World War One and Two, and other wars - a building of a nation.

The lyrics remind us that migration, exploration, and change are part of the same story. Whether arriving as a convict in the 18th century or as a modern traveller seeking opportunity, the experience of stepping onto new land carries the same mixture of uncertainty and hope.

I wanted to celebrate Australia, for the men and women from England who transformed themselves under sunlit waters starting at Sydney Harbour, “Arrived in Sydney” captures the emotional and historical arc of a country built by those willing to cross the horizon and those who had no choice.

And in the final chorus, the message becomes clear:
“When I arrived in Sydney town, I looked around,
God smiled, knew what would come, a hum resound.”
It is a song about arrival — but also about everything that follows.
