Industrial minerals around us: electric car.
Industrial minerals are used in manufacturing the widest variety of products ranging from glass to cement. They are used in plenty of industries – from electricity generation to motor vehicles’ production.
We have been trading in industrial minerals for over 22 years now and we insist that their use is a huge and complex process driving many industrial sectors.
Perhaps one of the most prominent examples nowadays is an electric car. A wide range of industrial minerals can be found under the hood of this hi-end engineering marvel.
🔹Tires and rubber parts: Aluminum Trihydrate improves fire resistance and mechanical properties of rubber, Hydromagnesite enhances mechanical properties, Silicate Sand/ Quartz increase grip and wear resistance of tires. Spherical Alumina reinforces rubber, Wollastonite improves mechanical properties, Cristobalite serves as a reinforcing material, Barite increases density, and Nepheline Syenite complements the mechanical properties of rubber.
Zircon, Wollastonite, and Chromite improve the properties of brake pads.
🔹Battery: Spodumene is the main source of Lithium. It gets processed to extract Lithium compounds required for cathodes, which determine battery capacity and performance. Petalite, Lepidolite and Lithium Feldspar are a secondary source of Lithium.
🔹Engines: Quartz sand is used for casting molds for metal parts, Chromite is used for high-temperature-resistant materials, Olivine minerals are used in ceramic compositions for components able to withstand extreme operating conditions.
🔹Cable insulation: Clays improve mechanical strength, Talc ups heat and fire resistance features, Mica enriches heat and sound insulation, and Aluminum Hydroxide and Calcium Fluoride improve fire resistance and electrical insulation.
🔹Plastics: air duct. Talc is used as a filler for stiffness and impact resistance. Calcium Carbonate is added to increase the strength of plastics, and Kaolin, besides adding strength, improves heat resistance. Barite can be added to increase density and radio transparency, Nepheline Syenite and Wollastonite – to improve mechanical strength, thermal stability, impact resistance.
🔹Lacquer: fortified with Silicate Sand/ Quartz to improve texture and durability, Kaolin is used to improve optical performance and structural integrity, Mica is added for gloss and additional protection, Iron Oxides - for color effects in coatings, while Alumina enhances structure and strength.
🔹Windshield: Quartz Sand makes the glass more resistant to scratches and damage, Dolomite is added to improve chemical resistance and strength, Soda Ash reduces the mixture’s melting point, Lithium Carbonate improves optical properties and UV protection, Alumina increases strength and heat resistance, Magnesia improves impact and abrasion resistance, while Zircon enhances heat resistance and mechanical strength of the windshield.
🔹Rear view mirrors: Aluminum coatings are used in anti-reflective surfaces and light transmission control, Zinc coatings are needed for corrosion protection and better durability, and silicate minerals like Magnesiа – for scratch resistance and transparency.
When we drive our car, we apparently come into contact with what’s been a result of the mandatory use of many industrial minerals.
In fact, we all come into contact with minerals wherever we are – and if you learn more about their properties, you will better understand how our world works and how multifaceted it is.
