Marko Rupnik is a Slovenian former Jesuit priest, theologian, and renowned mosaic artist. His art consists primarily of large-scale Byzantine-style mosaics that combine Eastern and Western European artistic traditions. His work is known for its distinctive figures, often featuring gold leaf accents and a unique practice of sharing a single eye between figures like God and man. Marko Rupnik created mosaics for the Blessed Sacrament Chapel (Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento), the main sacristy, and the chapter hall in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.
The works, created in his distinctive Byzantine style, are part of the modern decorations of the cathedral, which features a fusion of contemporary art styles. The mosaic depicting the Adoration of the Magi in this chapel was even used on the website of the Synod of Bishops in 2023.
