This video is about a poetical form dramatic nologue and two dramatic devices, soliloquy and aside. In this video the features and difference between the dramatic monologue and soliloquy are discussed. The dramatic monologue is one of the poetical forms and it is not a dramatic form. Dramatic monologue is cast in a speech form, and it is addressed to a silent listener. It depicts character study and psychoanalysis without any dramatic aids. The speaker, with the help of speech, describes the various moods and tries to justify his action. In a dramatic monologue, the speaker often unfolds or reveals his mental state to the listener. Robert Browning, the great Victorian poet made this poetical form quite popular. He was deeply interested in the inner world of man.
The Soliloquy is a character’s secret, and hidden thoughts, lying deep in his heart, which is said loudly on the stage, when no other actor in the play shares the stage with him. In soliloquies, the character speaks to one’s own self on the stage which is quite unusual.
According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the aside is something which a character in a play says to the audience, but which the other characters on stage are not intended to hear. The aside is a theatrical convention particularly employed in comedy, and melodrama.
