There is a lot of ambiguity about the way grading works in medical school. I wanted to go ahead and try to provide my perspective of how grading was for me in medical school. I took STEP1 when it was still graded numerically, but now STEP2CK has taken over that role (since STEP1 is purely pass/fail).
Below, I have linked several other videos that you may find useful (by yours truly and also FAQ that individuals often ask!):
Some questions that often arise from videos like this:
What are HIGHEST PAYING/MOST COMPETITIVE Medical Specialties? (don't worry, I have a great video on this here: • What are HIGHEST PAYING/MOST COMPETITIVE M... )
Answer: Usually, the higher paying the specialty, the more competitive it is.
Another common question: What Were the Most Competitive Specialties in 2021 MATCH?
Answer: • What Were the Most Competitive Specialties...
How Competitive is Internal Medicine? (Average USMLE Score?)
Answer: • What is the Average USMLE Score for Intern...
"If you want a career as an internist, here is how competitive the medical specialty is to match into an internal medicine residency. Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that involves physicians who provide long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex illnesses in adolescents, adults, and the elderly."
Prior to STEP1 going P/F, what score did medical students usually aim for? (via: https://www.lecturio.com/blog/medical...)
The short answer is: it depends. The current minimum passing score for Step 1 is a 194. The score you might want to get, however, could be somewhere between 238 or as high as 251, depending on the competitiveness of your desired specialty. In 2020, four of the top-matched specialty tracks for U.S. MD graduates were internal medicine, family medicine, anesthesiology, and radiology-diagnostic. The Step 1 score range for those top-matched specialities was between 220 and 249, and the percentage of first-year residents matched in these ranges in.2020 was between 60 percent and 66 percent.
What is the average salary for an internist? (Source: https://www.prospectivedoctor.com/how...)
"The average salary post-graduation from an internal medicine residency is $251,000, provided one does not go on to sub-specialty training which can change the salary substantially."
Does Publishing Articles Help You Match?
Source: https://www.statpearls.com/ExamPrep/m...
"For medical students and residents, publishing research articles can provide a uniquely rewarding educational experience. Medical students can publish articles to add to their residency application and become more competitive applicants. Residents can publish articles to meet the training requirements of their program and to bolster their fellowship applications, particularly when preparing for academic positions. In this article, we will discuss 5 ways in which publishing articles can help medical trainees by: 1) strengthening applications, 2) satisfying residency program requirements, 3) increasing personal medical knowledge, 4) providing easier access to future research opportunities, and 5) offering a sense of personal achievement."
