Yedi-Kule, the famous castle of Thessaloniki with its legendary prison, is the topic of several songs in the first half of the 20th century. Here in this 1934 composition, Sosos Ioannidis (also known by the nickname Psyriotis) employs the Segâh makam, with an emphasis on the Evç note and colour, to reinforce the lyrical theme of longing, heartbreak, imprisonment and intoxication. My contribution: a wink to Hadjidakis' piano style in the instrumental introduction, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary from his birth.
