The pursuit and practice of cybersecurity is now entering its second generation. With the massive adoption of connected technologies in every part of our lives, the ability to secure these technologies is not just big business, it also has huge relevance and impact. Yet it’s still treated as niche, often overlooked or misunderstood. We have failed to win mainstream public support or engagement, though the cost and other harms of security risks have reached a level that is driving widespread government notice and intervention. With all these factors at play, it is time for security to mature into its next phase. To do this, what are the lessons we can learn from the past 30 years, what can we determine about where security is headed, and can we play a bigger role in shaping our own destinies?
