Made-in-India bullet trains may soon belt down specialised rail corridors in the next few years. As per what sources have told Mint, the government wants to upgrade the existing semi high speed Vande Bharat trains to high speed ones for round 2 of the bullet train project. These trains could be used in future corridors of the bullet train project - and even on the existing railway network.
The Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai which designs and develops the Vande Bharat trains is tying up with BEML to design and make these new train sets, which will have a design speed of 280 kmph. Currently, the Vande Bharat trains have a max speed of 180 kmph - and this is stage 2 of the programme. Vande Bharat versions 3 and 4 will run at speeds of about 220 kmph and 260 kmph respectively.
