Socorro ISD reports positive progress on Texas cell phone ban, parents have mixed feelings

Описание: Texas has implemented a statewide ban on personal cellphone use for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with districts now adopting the policy at the start of the 2025-2026 school year.

The policy comes after Texas House Bill 1481 took effect, which bans the use of personal communication devices for students during the school day.

The law took effect this school year, requiring districts across Texas to create and enforce their own polices.

Socorro Independent School District has adopted the policy, with Assistant Superintendent Enrique Herrera reporting that the outcome has been mostly positive, with only 21 infractions among nearly 46,000 students.

"You know I think for a while, teachers were competing with really what’s on social media and maybe the distractions that come with it," Herrera said.

The ban aims to help students focus during school hours, though some parents express concerns about communication during emergencies.

One parent said, "I don't really agree with it because if something happens that's maybe community because somebody is saying, Hey, I'm in trouble."

Another parent acknowledged the district's efforts but added, "I would like to know that my child is okay."

While it allows for medical exemptions, it leaves details about the policies up to the districts.

While some parents told KFOX14/CBS4 they were unaware of the ban, KFOX14/CBS4 has reached out to both Ysleta and the El Paso Independent School Districts for further information on how they are adopting the law.
