TULSA, OKLAHOMA — U.S. army engineers discovered a vortex earlier this month in Lake Texoma, which lies at the border between Texas and Oklahoma, that they say is causing water levels in the lake to drop.
The Tulsa division of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers says the vortex measures 8 feet (2.4 meters) in diameter and is capable of sucking in a full-sized boat.
When a plug is pulled on a filled bathtub, the drainage creates a vortex. Similarly, when Lake Texoma's floodgates were opened to let out water, this vortex appeared. This is a normal occurrence when water is released from floodgates, say engineers.
The Business Insider reports that the area is off-limits and that engineers have marked the area with safety buoys and caution signs to keep people away.
Lake Texoma is formed by the Denison Dam and Red River in Bryan County, Oklahoma, and Grayson County, Texas.
